Two in three voters are backing the House’s vote last week to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, according to a new poll.

The survey, released Wednesday by Morning Consult and Politico, found that 66 percent of voters either strongly support or somewhat support the House’s historic vote. Twenty-five percent of survey respondents said they either somewhat oppose or strongly oppose the legislation.

The House voted largely along party lines on Dec. 4 to pass the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act. The legislation would remove marijuana from the federal list of controlled substances, in addition to expunging some marijuana-related convictions for nonviolent criminals.

The vote marks the first time either chamber of Congress has voted to legalize marijuana. 

In the Wednesday poll, 77 percent of Democrats said they strongly support or somewhat support the House’s vote. Eight percent said they did not know or had no opinion, and 15 percent said they either somewhat or strongly oppose the move. 

Among independents, 67 percent of voters polled supported the legislation, compared to 12 percent who did not know or had no opinion and 21 percent who did not back the legislation.

Fifty-one percent of Republicans said they support the House’s vote, compared to 8 percent who did not know or had no opinion and 40 percent who opposed the vote.
