UPDATE: Collier County Planning Commission has voted unanimously to not move forward with allowing medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated Collier County. The Commission voted 6-0 Thursday, citing a lack of information. 

The vote will now carry to the County Commission, set for an October 11th vote. If the vote is tabled due to a further lack of information, it will be voted on October 25th. 

PREVIOUS STORY: COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Collier County Planning Commissioners are discussing if medical marijuana dispensaries should be allowed in the city.

The commissioners hosted a special meeting on Thursday evening regarding the illegality of medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated Collier County (not including Naples and Marco Island). 

“The controversy over dispensing cannabis is over. Cannabis is being dispensed into our community today,” said County Commissioner Bill McDaniel of District 5, who may see a vote on this in the coming months. 

The County is one of the only in the entire state of Florida that has prohibitions against dispensaries. 

“I do think it’s gonna be a successful one this time. Because there’s been plenty of unsuccessful ones. The time is now. Collier county is one of the only counties that continues to have a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries. There are liquor and alcohol stores on every corner … so it’s time to have a place for dispensaries to dispense medicine that’s never killed anyone,” Nicholas…
