Albania-Italy cannabis trafficking down 36% in a yearPosted by On

(ANSAmed) – ROME, DECEMBER 14 – The quantity of cannabis
seized in Italy and trafficked from Albania until the end of
last October was down 36.7%, sinking to 910 kilos from 1.44 tons
in 2019, according to data presented during a videoconference.

The data came from air monitoring over Albanian territory
carried out by Italian tax police.

From June 1 until October 31, a ‘piaggio P166 DP’ aircraft
with specific equipment carried our 67 missions with 185 flying
hours, covering over 33% of Albanian territory. The campaign
allowed to detect 1,964 plantations, for a total of 58,423
destroyed plants, a significant growth from last year, when just
over 1,100 plantations were discovered and 25,719 plants were
destroyed.

The number, however, according to the director of the police
service for international cooperation of the interior ministry,
Brigade General Giuseppe Spina, ”should be considered as a
tangible sign of an increasingly elevated capacity of
intervention implemented by Albanian police against the specific
phenomenon”, he said at the presentation.

Overall, Albanian police, as expressed by its director
general Ardi Veliu, has destroyed over 137,000 plants, or 47,000
additional plants. Brigade General Giuseppe Arbore, head of the
third department of tax police operations, also said that
