Anti-marijuana group loses bid to keep NY donors privatePosted by On

Albany is set to weed out these anti-marijuana lobbyists.

The New York chapter of the Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM-NY) was on Tuesday knocked back in its bid to keep its deep-pocketed donors private, according to the Times Union.

The group, which wants to end the “commercialization and normalization” of marijuana, argued it should be exempt from disclosure rules because its supporters could be harassed, according to the paper.

The group, which reportedly spent more than $84,000 on lobbying during the recent legislative session, needed to prove that there would be a “substantial likelihood” of harm or reprisals for donors.

The state Joint Commission on Public Ethics on Tuesday denied the bid, with Commissioner George Weissman saying that the application did not “meet what we require under the law,” according to the report.

SAM-NY President Dr. Kevin Sabet said the group was reviewing its options to determine how best to proceed, the Times Union said.
