A bill going before the Maryland House Judiciary Committee would make it illegal for police to search a vehicle based on the alleged smell of marijuana.

It’s a top priority of the legislative black caucus in hope of ending racial profiling for that alleged reason.

The bill would reduce unnecessary police interactions that can be dangerous for Black people and people of color, lawmakers said.

Other advocates said that law enforcement has provided no evidence that stopping cars based on marijuana smells is reducing crime

Lawmakers also want to align laws with the legalization of recreational cannabis.
