A massive plume of smoke appeared in Delta on Sunday morning as fire took hold at a cannabis greenhouse that had closed in March.

According to Delta Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters were called to the blaze at Canopy Growth’s former Delta growing facility on the 10200-block of Hornby Drive at 7:30 a.m.

The fire escalated quickly, requiring 30 firefighters across seven crews to manage. The flames were contained to the shipping and receiving section of the property and did not affect any other exposed buildings in the area.

The fire was under control by the afternoon, with no indications of chemicals and fertilizers. Firefighters believed the smoke was not toxic.

The fire occurred at a greenhouse that was converted several years ago for Canopy to be the base of its B.C. production.

In March, the publicly-listed company announced it would shutter the operation in Delta, and a smaller growing facility in Aldergrove to “improve production efficiencies.” This led…
