Burst water pipe creates havoc in city as brown water gushes in CBDPosted by On

A burst water pipe is responsible for brown water flooding down George and Elizabeth streets in the Brisbane CBD on Friday afternoon, causing commuter chaos.

Already the floodwater has caused significant damage at the Oaks Hotel in George Street after the water began rushing downhill towards shops in Elizabeth Street.

Police confirmed Queensland Urban Utilities and Brisbane City Council, which manage the city’s water network, rushed to urgently determine where the water pipe had broken.

QUU later clarified water was flooding from a burst water pipe on George Street near the Elizabeth Street intersection.

A spokeswoman said it was likely some properties would be without water for several hours until the water pipe was repaired.

“Our crews will work as quickly as possible to repair the pipe this evening,” she said.

“Some properties are likely to be without water while repairs are underway and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

The ground-floor restaurant at the Oaks Hotel had already been significantly water-damaged, police said.
