Massachusetts voters legalized the recreational use of cannabis, or marijuana, for people aged 21 or older in 2016. Since then, the recreational trade has grown steadily.

Here’s a look at the marijuana business in the Bay State, by the numbers, according to the state’s Cannabis Control Commission.

264 adult-use marijuana retailers and 100 medical marijuana treatment centers have commenced operations in Massachusetts, as of Jan. 12, 2023.

242 adult-use marijuana licenses are pending approval by the state Cannabis Control Commission, as of Jan. 12, 2023.

More than 1,155 marijuana establishments — cultivators, product manufacturers, retailers, independent testing laboratories, microbusinesses, marijuana couriers — are licensed in Massachusetts, as of Sept. 15, 2022.

Massachusetts adult-use marijuana retailers took in $1.42 billion in sales between Jan. 1, 2022 and Dec. 18, 2022.

Massachusetts adult-use marijuana retailers have taken in more than $3.9 billion in sales since the first one opened in November 2018.
