Can CBD Be Effective

Nowadays, CBD products are taking the world by storm.  Can CBD be effective in helping with metal health and ones wellbeing? One of the key CBD benefits, which has recently been gaining attention is the use of CBD oil for anxiety, mental health and general wellbeing. While research into this area is fairly limited, studies so far have shown promising results. Which have led to rapid growth in the popularity of this cannabinoid. And a wave of new research being done into the advantages of CBD for mental health and well being.

What Is CBD?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a natural and non-addictive compound and one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. It is also the main active component in cannabis, alongside THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It accounts for nearly 40% of the plant’s extracts. CBD is obtained directly from the hemp plant, and unlike THC, it does not have any psychoactive effects. It is widely thought that CBD is responsible for the medicinal effects of cannabis. While THC is responsible for the psychoactive effects. For this reason, CBD has become increasingly popular as a medicinal drug. As it offers relief for various ailments and conditions without the ‘high’ that is often associated with cannabis.

Potential Benefits Of CBD

Research is still determining exactly how CBD works in our bodies, but it is widely thought that CBD can interfere with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for homeostasis in the body. It is formed from a series of neurotransmitters and cell receptors around the body. Whilst research into the ECS is limited; it is suggested that ECS impacts and regulates various bodily processes, including memory, appetite, and sleep. Research also suggests that CBD is effective by stimulating the ECS. To increase the production of its own cannabinoids and also slows down the breakdown of cannabinoids.

There are several benefits associated with CBD. Ranging from providing chronic pain relief and reducing the symptoms of epilepsy, to helping with anxiety and depression. Although research into the benefits of CBD is still relatively new and limited. Studies so far have shown positive results that suggest CBD is effective with a wide variety of ailments. For example, the benefits of CBD for epilepsy have been widely researched, and studies have found that CBD can greatly reduce, and sometimes altogether stop, seizures that are a result of epilepsy. Additionally, there has recently been much research into how CBD can benefit mental health and wellbeing with some promising results.

CBD Research

However, the key issue that CBD is facing at the moment is the lack of research into the long term effects of CBD. For this reason, it is currently difficult to advise CBD as a safe option to treat illnesses such as epilepsy. Another difficulty is the fact that the recommended dosage is still unclear. The effects and tolerability can differ from person to person. It is currently recommended to begin on a smaller dose. Working your way up until you find the level that is most beneficial for you. Some recent studies have shown results that imply that tolerability does not change over time, which would be yet another benefit of CBD as it means dosage does not have to increase over time, but this is yet to be determined.

CBD For Mental Health & Wellbeing

There has recently been a lot of attention on whether CBD has therapeutic effects and whether CBD can benefit mental health and wellbeing, and this is one of the main reasons why the popularity of CBD has grown exponentially over the last few years. Whilst the research into this area is fairly limited. Results so far have been positive, and evidence implies that CBD can, in fact, benefit mental health, anxiety and depression.

It is still unclear how exactly CBD affects mental health and wellbeing, but it is thought that CBD interacts with CBD1 and CBD2 receptors in a way that alters serotonin signals. Serotonin is a type of chemical within the body that serves several functions and impacts many functions but is most widely known as being responsible for regulating mood. Low levels of serotonin are often the cause of depression and anxiety. It is thought that maintaining a healthy and balanced level of serotonin. Can help to improve mood and reduce depression and anxiety. Therefore, it is believed that CBD can benefit mental health and wellbeing. Through regulating the levels of serotonin in our bodies and thus regulating mood and reducing the chance of depression and anxiety.

CBD Research Studies

Although there are limited studies into the effects of CBD on wellbeing in humans. There has been more extensive research conducted on the impact of CBD on anxiety in animals. For example, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) conducted a research study into the effects of CBD on Generalised Anxiety Order (GAD) in animals. It was found that CBD reduced the effects of anxiety. As both behavioural and physiological symptoms of stress reduced in subjects that had been given CBD. Another study found that CBD could help with the effects of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), and there has also been much recent research into the effects of CBD on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with results suggesting that CBD helps to reduce side effects of PTSD, such as nightmares.

Also, there is some evidence that CBD can help with insomnia. It is widely understood that depression and anxiety can cause sleep problems, and likewise, sleep problems can increase depression and anxiety. By helping to reduce the effects of insomnia and aiding in sleep. CBD can benefit mental health and wellbeing through improving the mood and reducing depression and anxiety. A recent retrospective study into the effects of CBD on insomnia found that 80% of the participants who took CBD had reduced anxiety levels after one month, and approximately 70% of participants had improved sleep scores after one month.

Conclusion

However, the key issue that CBD is facing at the moment is the lack of research into the long term effects of CBD. For this reason, it is currently difficult to advise CBD as a safe option to treat illnesses such as epilepsy. Another difficulty is the fact that the recommended dosage is still unclear.
