Police have destroyed 132 marijuana trees.

This follows a dawn raid in Chimbu Province last week in the Tabare area of Sinasina-Yongomugl

district.

However no arrests were made.

Police said that this is due to the villagers allegedly protecting the marijuana growers.

Chimbu police commander Chief Superintendent Jacob Singura said after uprooting the trees,

policemen questioned a leader on the identity of the growers.

They were told that the owner of the trees lived in Goroka.

Chief Supt Singura said youths were becoming lazy and were causing a lot of social problems.

He said the suspects in question are deeply rooted in the cannabis trade and homebrewing of alcohol.
