Lisa James screamed and “legged it” when she was confronted by a man on a violent crime spree in central Christchurch.
James at The Terrace bar Amazonita, working her normal shift for Barhoppers Cleaning, when she heard a noise coming from the nearby Bangalore Polo Club about 3.50am on Tuesday.
“I got told there was a man with a stick and to stay inside… I didn’t realise he had actually broken the statues [outside The Bangalore Polo Club]”.
As James called police to explain what was going on, she found herself face to face with the offender with just a window between them.

She immediately screamed and ran.
“I didn’t know if he was going to smash through those windows and deal to me because he saw me. I had to run to protect myself.”
James said early morning workers like herself were at the mercy of “trolls under the bridge”.
