Cannabis giant Curaleaf Holdings is seeking a permit that would allow it to add recreational cannabis sales to its medical dispensary at 92 Weston St. in Hartford.

In an email response to questions, a Curaleaf representative said the company is working with state and local officials to gain needed approvals. A move to recreational use would not alter the high level of service offered to medical patients at the site, the representative wrote.

If approved, the site could be Hartford’s first recreational dispensary. The state’s adult-use market officially debuted on Jan. 10 with only seven dispensaries, including ones in New Haven and Stamford. In its first week, recreational sales surpassed $2 million. 

According to Curaleaf’s website, the Wakefield, Massachusetts-based company operates 142 dispensaries and 26 cultivation sites over 21 states. That includes a 60,000-square-foot cultivation facility in Simsbury.

The application to Hartford’s Planning and Zoning Commission was submitted in the name of Arrow Alternative Care, a company Curaleaf acquired – including three Connecticut locations – in 2020. That acquisition included the Hartford dispensary, along with two more in Stamford and Milford.

There are no proposed changes to the 3,486-square-foot space Curaleaf operates in a larger warehouse building at 92 Weston St., according to the application filed by law firm Carmody Torrance Sandak Hennessey.
