An expectant dad faces missing the birth of his child after being caught with a cannabis factory producing drugs worth £37,000 at his home.

Don Staple’s then-home in System Street in Adamsdown in Cardiff was raided by South Wales Police officers on October 12 last year, a court heard.

In total they found 16 medium plants and 29 seedlings as well as halogen lights and a fan while there were also scales and small, clear plastic bags at the house.

The approximate street value of the cannabis was said to be up to £37,270.

Cardiff Crown Court heard on Thursday that Staple had 70 previous convictions for 132 offences.

Included in that were five drugs offences, the most recent in 2017 when Staple was convicted for the production of cannabis and given a two-month prison sentence.
