KOLKATA: Thirteen people have been arrested for attempt to murder, rioting and attempt to vandalize public property in seven FIRs lodged at five Kolkata police stations following BJP’s rally that turned violent on Tuesday. Seven others are being questioned.
Police said apart from the PCR van that was set ablaze at the MG Road-Rabindra Sarani crossing, a police kiosk near Poddar Court was vandalized. The extent of losses are being assessed, police said. Twenty-seven Kolkata police personnel, including ACPs and inspectors, were injured in the violence.
Two FIRs with multiple non-bailable sections have been registered at the Burrabazar police station. The first pertains to the assault on ACP (Central) Debjit Chatterjee on MG Road-Rabindra Sarani crossing where he was chased by alleged BJP supporters, hit with sticks, pinned down to the ground and assaulted repeatedly. Three persons-Anup Singh (22) from New Market, Sahil Roy (22) alias Prem from Entally and Ravi Kant Singh (35) from Beliaghata-have been arrested and charged with attempt to murder and assault to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. A city court on Wednesday sent them to police custody till September 20.
Abhijit Roy (41), a resident of Santosh Pally in Baguiati, was arrested for setting the police PCR vehicle on fire. He has been charged under stringent sections of The Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act.
