DILG chief: Shabu users shift to marijuanaPosted by On

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 30) – Interior Secretary Eduardo Año on Monday said more drug users nowadays are shifting to marijuana, as it has become difficult to access from crystal meth or shabu.

“Amin pong napansin, dahil din sa kahirapang makakuha ng shabu, mukhang unti-unting bumabalik po sa paggamit ng marijuana ang ating mga drug addict,” he said during the weekly address of President Rodrigo Duterte and other Cabinet members.

[Translation: We observed that because of the difficulty in accessing shabu, it seems drug addicts are slowly going back to marijuana.]

Año’s statement comes after 128 kilos of marijuana, worth ₱15.360 million, were confiscated during a police operation in Balintawak, Quezon City on Sunday.

The Philippine National Police also discovered three marijuana plantations at Kibungan and Bakun in Benguet last Nov. 24, wherein 28,800 marijuana plants amounting to ₱5.76 million, were uprooted and burnt.

Año also noted that the PNP and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency were able to seize ₱12.47 billion worth of shabu, cocaine, ecstasy, and marijuana from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30.

Several bills legalizing marijuana or cannabis for medical use were refiled at the House of Representatives in the 18th Congress, after the proposed measure failed to move forward during the 17th Congress.
