The votes are in, but the fate of the End of Life Choice Act and legalisation of cannabis will remain a mystery for almost three weeks.
If the majority of New Zealanders voted in favour in the assisted dying referendum, the act – which would allow adults who have a terminal illness likely to end their lives within six months, and are experiencing “significant and ongoing decline in physical capability”, to request assisted dying – will become law in 12 months’ time.
If the majority were opposed – or there is a tie – and another referendum is not held, the act will expire in five years.
