A former member of the Albanian military has been jailed following a raid on a cannabis factory in Coventry.
A court heard Ylli Baha was willing to work illegally while he was visiting his son in this country – only to end up looking after a cannabis factory in a Hillfields house.
Baha managed to escape when the house was raided by the police – but was caught nearby after being spotted because of his distinctive footwear.
Baha, 54, who had previously been staying with his son in Isleworth, London, was jailed for nine months after he pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to producing cannabis.
Chloe Ashley, prosecuting, said that on April 10 the police had reports of suspicious activity at a two-bedroom, mid-terrace house in Blythe Road, Hillfields.
When two officers arrived at 9.15pm one of them looked through the letterbox and saw there was a man inside wearing red trainers.
They knocked the door and, since it would not have been apparent because they were in plain clothes, announced that they were the police.
The man, Baha, came to the door but instead of opening it removed the key from the lock and ran out of the back door where he could be heard crashing over fences.
One of the officers rushed down an alleyway to the rear of the houses, but Baha had got away.
He was found a short time later in Harnall Lane East, where he was recognised because of his red trainers, and was taken back to the house where a key he had on him fitted the front door.
