AN overwhelming 80 percent of people who responded to this week’s webpoll question think the CBD needs cleaning up — and quick smart.

The question was, “Do you agree that the CBD is a disgrace and the district council should do something to improve it?”

A total of 281 people voted in the webpoll, with 225 of them ticking the “yes’ box.

But one respondent who replied in the negative said it was a leading question.

That person was among 42, or 15 percent, who voted “no”. Fourteen people (5 percent) said they didn’t care.

Among the comments from the “yes” voters:

‘ “I live in the CBD and agree it is very messy. GDC staff do a pretty good job but they could be rostered on more for cleaning. Landlords and retailers have a responsibility too.”

‘ “The tripping paving stones are dangerous as I have personally found out. Some of the shop frontages are not good and I would like to see a town square to bring people back into town. It could have a consolidated history of Gisborne as well as some interesting sculptures, murals, activities etc.”

‘ “Yes, it’s a disgrace, especially opposite ANZ Bank.”

‘ “All very shabby, badly damaged pavers and loads of those everywhere.”
