Jacksonville City Council has approved a zoning change needed to bring a retail marijuana dispensary to the city.
Council on Monday voted 8-1 in favor of the dispensary, to be built at 1112 Veterans Drive. Alderman Darcella Speed was absent, while Alderman Alison Rubin de Celis was the sole “no” vote. It was the second of two required readings for a necessary zoning charge to be approved, with council members approving first reading 9-1 on March 15.
The rezoning request was filed by Kenny Pleasant, strategic consultant for Washington-based dispensary company Kush21. The new store will be Kush21’s first location outside of Washington. Pleasant was not at the meeting and was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
The idea was met with some trepidation from a few Jacksonville residents. At the meeting, three people voiced their disagreement with the dispensary, citing concerns that it may cause an increase in crime in the area or cause people to become addicted to marijuana.
Adult-use cannabis dispensaries are not new to the state or to west-central Illinois, but most of those in the region are in Springfield, which has six, or Quincy, which has three. The next-closest locations from Jacksonville are Williamsville, about 50 miles to the northeast, and Litchfield, about 70 miles to the southeast.
