Legalization and What It Means to Me

2018 is only just beginning, but I can already say that this is going to be a great time for cannabis and legalization. The year begun with recreational cannabis going on sale in California, Massachusetts is on course to begin sales in July along with Canada, which will be the first major economy to offer sales nationwide. That’s whilst the likes of New Jersey and Vermont look likely to join them with a whole host of popular support for further decriminalization in other US states, New Zealand, Australia, South America and across Europe too. This optimism is despite Jeff Sessions revoking the Cole Memo, something already looking inconsequential considering the Colorado and California Attorneys have already said they won’t enforce federal laws.

For the consumer this is going to mean massive changes, not only will they be able to avoid purchasing from the black market but now a whole new set of choices will open up way beyond what we are used to. Normally the experience of buying cannabis would mean meeting some shady dealer who if you’re lucky won’t rip you off by selling underweight mids, which they assure you doesn’t look much but will “blow your head off”. Now you will be able to go online or visit your local dispensary, where some cool friendly stoner will talk you through a range of products so large it will make your head spin.

There will be all manner of Indicas, Sativas and Hybrids with names that sometimes make no sense but are always evocative. No longer will you be limited to just flowers or some BHO but you’ll be able to choose from all manner of concentrates, there are pills, lotions and enough edible treats for even the fussiest of eaters. If none of these floats your boat then you can purchase a patch or ingest your THC sublingually from a dropper. If quick and discreet is your thing but you still like the action of smoking then you can try out a liquid vaporizer, these come with all manner of flavours and it’s as simple as taking a quick puff and putting it away. With vaping e-liquids becoming so popular in the last few years no one will even realise you’re secretly getting high as they just presume you are getting your nicotine fix.

The thing I am most excited about, beyond the incredible choices I now have, is the fact that a free market with so much competition is going to mean better deals and improved prices. With so many businesses desperate to cash in they will all be competing for our dollar, this is already seeing dispensaries offering cheap grams and ounces as well throwing on freebies such as edibles and even loyalty cards to keep you coming back again and again. My first recreational order I saved $20 with an Eaze promo code and now I intend to ride this wave of freebies and discounts until I can find no more. Well that, or I find a dispensary I like and trust enough to stick with.

Despite some setbacks and a few teething problems, the rollout of legalization has begun. I’m sure there will be more bumps in the road and there will be the odd hidden hand that tries to enforce its own agenda but I am still full of excitement for all that the future holds and 2018 promises to be a great year, so let’s all raise a spliff, blunt, vape or edible and enjoy this new-found freedom.
