Maine shatters medical cannabis sales recordPosted by On

Medical marijuana users in Maine have spent more on cannabis products in 2020 than any year on record, according to state sales tax data. Between the start of January and end of November, sales for medicinal cannabis reached $221.8 million, more than doubling the previous record set in 2019. The legal cannabis industry as a whole has avoided much of the economic downturn spurred on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Other states that have legalized the drug have also seen boosts in sales, including Massachusetts and Colorado. Industry analysts attribute the surge in sales to the increased time most Americans are spending amid the pandemic at home coupled with expanding access and acceptance of cannabis use. The growth in Maine’s medical sales does not account for the still budding adult recreational market, which posted about $1.4 million in sales in its first month. The recreational sales represent opportunity for further expansion into the surging legal cannabis industry, with dozens of prospective cultivators, manufactures and retailers still awaiting state licensing.
