In budget documents published last week, the Administrative Hearing Commission requested nearly $200,000 from the veterans fund to hire two more staff attorneys, and to cover increased equipment, expense and court reporting costs.

“The AHC needs additional contracted court reporters and two additional attorneys,” the budget request said. “The AHC plans to have all staff attorneys work on medical marijuana cases in order to move cases efficiently.”

The request is for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2021, meaning officials expect the backlog of appeals to drag on for at least the next year.

The backlog has reverberated throughout state government.

In April, the Clean Water Commission was considering taking a dispute to the Administrative Hearing Commission.

Such a move would make sense, said Ross Kaplan, of the Missouri attorney general’s office, but he warned the commission was swamped with medical marijuana appeals, according to the commission’s April minutes.
