Just a few months after the first recreational-use dispensaries opened for business, cannabis is more easily accessible than ever and is becoming a popular gift idea. “(Cannabis) has been legal since 2016. But, however, there’s been no way for people to shop for it legally,” said Peter Ingram, CEO of Maine Cannabis exchange, which operates both a medical dispensary and adult-use store in South Portland. Ingram said THC products can make great gifts, but he encourages shoppers to familiarize themselves with Maine’s regulations around giving out cannabis. The state caps the maximum amount of flower cannabis one person can gift another at 2.5 ounces, with other restrictions around giving concentrate products. “I think gifting cannabis is going to be as common as gifting wine when you go to someone’s house for the holiday,” Ingram said. Nationally, industry analysts expect Americans to spend about $400 million on cannabis products around the holidays this year. The first adult-use dispensaries opened in October. Ingram said anyone giving a product with THC as a gift should make sure the recipient knows exactly what they are getting, including how strong the product is and how it is intended to be consumed.
