IRONWOOD — The Ironwood Planning Commission recommended that the city commission increase the number of commercial marijuana licenses allowed under the city ordinance at its July 1 meeting.
The 5-0 approval recommends that the city commission increase the available licenses in each of seven commercial marijuana categories from two to up to six. Planning Commission member Mark Silver was not present.
The item emerged at the conclusion of the June 24 special meeting of the planning commission and city commission to consider 16 applicants for five categories of marijuana retail, growing, processing and micro-businesses under the city adult-use marijuana ordinance. The city commission tentatively approved 10 applications — the top two applicants in each category, as recommended by a city scoring and ranking process that followed the planning commission site plan and conditional use permitting process.
Sam Davey, planning commission chair, suggested that the city expand the licenses, noting the potential for additional jobs, along with new and rehabilitated properties that are of benefit to the community. The proposals were strong and the scoring was close enough that members of both commissions recommended more licenses be allowed.
