Police crack down on farmers growing marijuana, opium in Pune | Pune NewsPosted by On


PUNE: Several farmers from rural areas are cultivating marijuana or opium.
The Pune rural police have conducted four raids in the last two months while the city police have raided one such farm.
On Thursday, the Pune city police raided an opium farm located at Holkarwadi near Wadki off Pune-Saswad Road and seized over 1,300 plants of opium.
On Friday afternoon, the rural police raided a three-acre farm in Indapur where a large plantation of marijuana was found.
The Pune rural police have raided farms located in Khed, Jejuri, Saswad and Indapur so far, this year.
Last year, the rural police had carried out five such raids in Indapur, Shikrapur, Otur, Saswad and Manchar.
“All these farmers are involved in the illegal cultivation of marijuana or opium. They are growing these plants without a licence. It is done for profits,” Ankit Goyal, superintendent of police, Pune rural said.
Goyal said they were interrogating farmers about growing opium and marijuana and were trying to ascertain the locations where the produce is processed and for what purpose.
“Secondly, we are trying to ascertain how these farmers procured the seeds or saplings to grow them,” he added.
Inspector Datta Chavan of Loni Kalbhor police told TOI, “We have arrested two farmers for growing opium in their fields. Poppy has several by-products, including khas-khas, which is used in sweets.
