Police teams deployed in maritime islands as new information emerge regarding cultivation of marijuana
The Fiji Police Force is stepping up its momentum on the war on drugs as teams have been deployed to a number of maritime islands following leads on the cultivation of marijuana in new areas.
This follows a case where a couple from Vatuwaqa was charged for the alleged cultivation of illicit drugs last week after a raid at their home which uncovered a large amount of cash believed to have been proceeds of crime.
More than $4,000 and dried leaves were found inside the house.
It is alleged the two were cultivating marijuana on Gau Island where a team of officers discovered more than 700 marijuana plants.
The husband and wife have been remanded in custody and their case will be called again this Tuesday.
In another raid in the Northern Division yesterday, a 25-year-old farmer of Qaravutu Village is in custody following the seizure of close to 3,000 plants believed to be marijuana.
An operation team from Tukavesi Police Station conducted the raid at a farm allegedly belonging to the suspect.
Following the training with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation System last week, Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says as more information is received about the cultivation and trade of illicit drugs in maritime areas, rib boats are being deployed to boost current efforts on the war on drugs.
