Marijuana is a psychopharmaceutical drug (chemical substance) that alters neural system functioning, resulting in euphoria, emotion, awareness, cognition, or conduct changes.

The drug is a byproduct of the Cannabis plant. Though it is legal in certain countries and certain states of some countries, it is the most widely used illicit substance in the world, with the highest usage among adults in Zambia, the United States, Canada, and Nigeria. In 2013, approximately 128 and 232 million individuals (2.7% to 4.9% of worldwide, aged 15 to 65) consumed cannabis.

Federal laws have been classifying marijuana in the same category as significantly more hazardous substances such as heroin and LSD. It is in the same class as the relatively new and highly addictive chemicals fentanyl and methamphetamine.
