KOLHAPUR: Three youths engaged in tennis-ball cricket near the security wall of the Kalamba jail here on Tuesday seemed pretty much innocuous to any passerby. But not for a police constable, who was suspicious as the game was being played for along time at a sensitive spot. He and his colleagues took the youths to the police station.
On being questioned, the youths, all from Bibvewadi in Pune, confessed that the three tennis balls with them had been cut open, filled with marijuana and re-stitched. They had planned to lob the balls over the jail’s wall for an undertrial prisoner, Shahu Shaikh, to collect.
Shaikh, from Kondhwa, is in jail for a murder attempt. His brother, Tanvir, is a close friend of the trio.
Inspector Pramod Jadhav of the Juna Rajwada police said the youths — Vaibhav Kothari (24), Sandesh Deshmukh (20) and Amit Paygude (25) — were arrested under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They were released after giving a personal surety but…
