Saskatoon police say they suspended two drivers’ licences Tuesday night after both tested positive for cannabis.
Officers pulled the first driver over. Police say he tested positive for cannabis and had his licence suspended and his vehicle impounded.
Police say the driver then called a friend to pick them up. When that friend arrived, they also tested positive for cannabis, police said.
The second driver also got their licence suspended and vehicle impounded.
Saskatoon police say that both vehicles also had ignition interlock devices stemming from past impaired driving offences.
Length of suspension depends on the driver’s history (previous offences), level of experience and type of licence.
For new drivers, a first time offence results in a 60-day licence suspension. A second time offence results in a 120-day suspension and a third time offence results in an 18-month suspension.
For experienced drivers, the licence suspension lengths are three days, 21 days and 90 days for first, second and third offences respectively.
Additional time for suspensions can be given if the driver is transporting someone under 16 while impaired.
