Shabu use down, marijuana abuse up in Central Visayas

CEBU CITY – Based on the amount of illegal drugs seized in the first four months of the year, the distribution of shabu in Region 7 has gone down, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA 7) said.

PDEA 7 regional director Levi Ortiz said the restrictions set out by the government to contain the spread of COVID-19 have affected the illegal drug trade.

During the destruction of seized shabu and marijuana worth P21.5 million last Monday, Ortiz revealed that from January to April 2020, the PDEA 7 was able to seize P129 million worth of shabu.

“In the same period last year, our seizure of shabu only amounted to P54 million. There’s a big a difference,” said Ortiz.

While it seemed that the distribution of shabu has reduced, the use of marijuana has become more rampant, said Ortiz.

Ortiz said the PDEA 7 has busted a number of drug dens this year where several people were caught using marijuana.

“Because people are restricted, they gather and they hold pot sessions,” said Ortiz.

In Cebu City alone, the PDEA 7 has already dismantled at least 11 drug dens this year.
