A large illegal cannabis-growing operation was discovered while deputies investigated the shooting of a San Jose man earlier this month, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, deputies responded to the Cal Fire Covelo station on Covelo Road around 8:15 p.m. July 4 when it was reported that a man with a gunshot wound had been dropped off there.

The victim, described only as a 28-year-old man from San Jose, reportedly said he had been shot by a family member during an altercation near the intersection of Highway 162 and Mendocino Pass Road, then was airlifted to an out-of-county hospital for further treatment.

Working with an investigator from the California Highway Patrol, MCSO deputies interviewed the victim further and identified the suspected shooter as Angel Reyes-Guzman, 28, of San Jose and Modesto. On July 15, Reyes-Guzman was located in Modesto by law enforcement in Stanislaus County and booked into jail there on suspicion of attempted murder and other charges.

On July 19, MCSO deputies investigating the shooting responded to the 29000 block of Barnes Lane in Covelo, which was described as hosting a “large non-permitted and illegal marijuana growing operation encompassing two adjoined parcels.”

MCSO detectives were assisted by the Mendocino County Major Crimes Task Force (MMCTF), the County of Mendocino Marijuana Enforcement Team (COMMET), CHP officers from the Garberville and Ukiah area offices, and a CHP helicopter and…
