Ten years ago, Emmet Reistroffer was standing in front of the Minnehaha County Administration building petitioning for medical cannabis.

Now, as COO of Genesis Farms LLC, Reistroffer is celebrating the beginning stages of bringing Minnehaha County its first medical marijuana dispensary.

Following months-long debate on safely regulating medical marijuana use since becoming legal last July, Minnehaha County Commission finally authorized its first-ever license to dispense medical cannabis.

On Tuesday, the four-member board unanimously approved the single-capped license for Genesis Farms during a public hearing at its weekly meeting. Commissioner Jean Bender was absent from the meeting.

The location of Genesis Farms dispensary will be at 7605 E Arrowhead Parkway. County auditor Ben Kyte informed commissioners Genesis Farms had cleared all the hurdles, from getting their conditional use permit approved through Planning and Zoning Commission and other approvals through the state.

By default, via their lottery system process, Genesis Farms was chosen for final approval and other applications were not considered.

“We’re working with neighbors to make sure it’s a compatible location,” said Reistroffer. “I’m pleased to report that we’ve received several state licenses already at other locations.”

Reistroffer says he’s looking forward to doing business in Minnehaha County, where he’s from.
