WEYMOUTH — About a month ago, Dr. Mark Waltzman said he saw a young man in South Shore Health’s pediatric emergency department who had eaten five 600 milligram candies that looked just like Skittles, yet contained THC – the active ingredient in marijuana.

“He ingested three grams of THC at one time. The medicinal dosing for these is five to 10 milligrams, so he took a huge amount,” Waltzman said. “When I contacted the state toxicologist to show them the packaging, I got a phone call back immediately saying he could be in serious trouble.”

As emergency rooms continue to see an uptick in children and young adults suffering accidental marijuana overdoses, doctors are warning families to be vigilant as candies, gummies, sours, and chocolates that contain marijuana are more readily available.

Waltzman said there has been an uptick in incidences involving children who have gotten sick after accidentally eating products containing THC.
