Spiritleaf, a company that operates cannabis retail stores in Western Canada, has identified Collingwood as one of the stops on its national expansion.

“Spiritleaf as a company is undergoing a pretty big expansion,” said store manager Adam Tuerlings. “They’re working hard and have now accomplished having stores coast to coast. Collingwood, being a somewhat open area still as far as the cannabis industry is concerned, was a good place to start.”

The company is planning to open a store at 10 Balsam St. in early August. Tuerlings said residents can expect a “welcoming, warm and friendly” environment where they can purchase and get educated on cannabis.

“The goal would really be to insert ourselves as a reputable, approachable business within the community,” he said. “We’re going to try and get involved with anything we’re allowed to get involved with community wise.”

Despite being legal since October 2018, Tuerlings said there still is a stigma surrounding the product. 

“It’s something us recreational users are working hard trying to quash,” he said. “We’re ending prohibition here.”

Because there is much variety in retail cannabis, education will be key to helping locals make the right choices.

“Customer service is going to be a huge part of what we do and how we differentiate ourselves from the competition,” he said.
