Many Americans are suffering but not of the same things. Ailments run the gamut of epilepsy, chronic pain, cancer, anxiety, PTSD, inflammation, and no two people experience the effects of any of these diagnoses the same. Patients use one conventional pharmaceutical for their initial symptom or syndrome, and then other drugs must be added to the regimen to deal with the side effects of the first drug. It’s a confusing puzzle and requires many trips to the doctor, and some trial and error, not to mention a financial strain for those whose conditions aren’t covered by their health insurance.
But, there’s one compound that can help all of these ailments—do you know about it?
What is hemp-based CBD?
CBD (the chemical compound Cannabidiol) derives from the hemp and has been shown to have some fantastic health benefits without the side effects of some traditional pharmaceuticals. Since CBD is not psychoactive, it helps quell the signs and symptoms of inflammation, seizures, muscle spasms, insomnia, chronic pain, anxiety, and many more ailments without intoxication.
CBD is one of a group of chemicals, called cannabinoids, for which there are receptors found in all mammals. Us humans are no different. We have thousands of cannabinoid receptors throughout our body, from the brain to the major organs. Some even occur in the nervous system and digestive system. All of these receptors make up a network called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Although it is a recent discovery, the ECS may prove to be the most significant neurotransmitter systems in the body, helping maintain homeostasis; it manages mood, motor control, sleep patterns, reproductive functions, pain signals, bone development, and even immune functions.
Producers typically turn CBD into an oil that contains significant amounts of the potent cannabinoid. CBD products and extracts come from 100% legal industrial hemp, which is considered one of the primary sources of this natural medicine. Other names for CBD oil are: hemp CBD oil or hemp extract. Whatever you want to call it, make sure you are looking for wellness products that are traceable, seed-to-sale, and that often means products made locally and by renowned producers. CBD products made with food grade oil—those include MCT oil, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil—can be added to foods and drinks, while others may be applied topically. The mode of application or consumption, of course, depends on the ailment—internal or external.
What symptoms, syndromes and disorders benefit from CBD?
Pharmaceutical companies have developed numerous drugs to treat specific disorders and drug side-effects, but with the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, the phytocannabinoid called Cannabidiol, (CBD) has shown to be one substance that treats more than one disorder. CBD comes from the Cannabis sativa L. plant. This compound has been shown to have amazing health benefits and does not make you feel “high.” CBD oil, or cannabidiol that extracted into something like a medium-chain triglyceride oil, anecdotally proves to counteract the euphoric high from THC (or Tetrahydrocannabinol) for which cannabis is best known. But the full list of CBD oil benefits is much, much longer than that. It also helps to quell inflammation, seizures, spasms, sleeplessness, psychosis, pain, anxiety, and many more ailments without intoxication. The following symptoms and disorders are some of the most common cases that receive relief from CBD oil benefits.
Patients that know the crippling affliction of anxiety and the chemical imbalances it causes will be relieved to know that something as simple as CBD oil may help with boosting serotonin receptor signals, similar to what SSRI drugs are meant to do. One animal study in particular also found that CBD oil may also assist the hippocampus to regenerate neurons. This action is highly useful for treating both anxiety and depression. A CBD oil regimen goes well with other methods of mitigating stress, including talk therapy, meditation, acupuncture, and physical activity.
Some people are already using CBD oil to help relieve pain, inflammation, and overall discomfort related to chronic pain. CBD oils are also proving useful for treating some patients’ localized pain, inflammation, and swelling. The question on the minds of many doctors and patients is whether CBD oil is better at treating persistent pain than opioid drugs. More research on CBD oil benefits as it pertains to chronic pain management could in time help patients can safely switch from the addictive pain management medications prescribed to something as gentle as CBD oil.
Most digestive disorders are a result of two things: the immune system and inflammation. Not only does CBD oil ease inflammation but it can also suppress the body’s immune function, meaning that an overactive immune system that is prone to autoimmune disorder flare-ups can find relief. One 2011 study conducted by the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that 21 of 30 Crohn’s disease patients significantly improved their condition with a medical CBD oil regimen.
There remains a lack of concrete evidence for CBD oil benefits as it pertains to arthritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis but the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD oil could in time prove to be effective on the pain and swelling associated with these disorders.
Two studies on CBD oil benefits for arthritis do stand out, however. The first study, conducted by the Canadian Arthritis Society, sought to discover if CBD oil can relieve pain from arthritic joints. Researchers determined that because the pain-detecting nerves are part of the endocannabinoid system, they have cannabinoid receptors. CBD mitigates the firing of pain signals by sticking themselves to nerve receptors.
The second study, conducted by the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in the UK, showed that CBD improves the pain felt during movement, the pain felt at rest, and quality of sleep—these are the trifecta of common complaints of the person living with arthritis. CBD oil is gaining popularity as a treatment for arthritis, in some states, people living with arthritis do not even qualify for access to CBD oil.
How safe is CBD oil?
Overall, the safety profile of cannabidiol products is quite impressive. The authors of the research paper, “Safety and Side Effects of Cannabidiol, a Cannabis sativa Constituent” included this in their conclusion:
“Several studies suggest that CBD is well tolerated and safe in humans at high doses and with chronic use. However,
in vitro and in vivo studies showed potential drug
metabolism interactions, cytotoxicity, and decreased receptor activity. This data highlights the need for careful monitoring
of CBD use in humans, especially when CBD is part of a
clinical practice, such as in the treatment of psychiatric
disorders or as an option for drug abuse treatment.”
Some users of CBD oil may experience sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and upset stomach.
CBD oil is safe for most people to use, and there are few, if any, serious side effects. Most people can ingest CBD oil without ever feeling any unpleasant side effect; for those who do it will be minor. In the case of an adverse reaction, always look into the background of the product’s manufacturers. Always research the products you buy, and consult with a medical expert on the safest way to use CBD oil.
Athletes use CBD too!
Professional and amateur athletes, from major leagues to the Olympics, regularly rely on two types of medications that are approved by the World Anti-Doping Agency to mitigate pain. They are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and skeletal muscle relaxants. NSAIDs relieve acute pain and have some mild side effects that go away on their own while others require further more medications on top of the painkiller. Adverse side effects include stomach pain, heartburn, and ulcers; a tendency to bleed excessively; headaches and dizziness; ear ringing; allergic reactions; liver or kidney problems; high blood pressure; and leg swelling due to fluid retention. All prescription NSAIDs come with a warning about heart attack, stroke, and stomach bleeding.
Skeletal muscle relaxants likewise improve acute or chronic low back pain, muscle tension, and mobility but one of the typical side effects is addiction and dependency.
WADA has removed CBD from its 2018 prohibited substances list.
“Cannabidiol is no longer prohibited,” WADA said in a Sept. 29 statement. For athletes, CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-nauseate, sleep aid, muscle relaxant, sedative and anti-proliferative. On top of all that, it has not even half of the negative side effects. In the words of mixed martial artist, Nate Diaz, “It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It’ll make your life a better place.”
CBD oil is not the hemp oil you find in the grocery store
The hemp seed oil you find in your local Whole Foods is purely nutritional but not as medicinal as CBD oil. Nutritional hemp oil is produced by cold pressing hemp seeds, whereas CBD oil products are made from a full hemp plant extraction with many components not found in just the seeds. Hemp seed oil from your local grocer is considered to be an ideal nutritive food—great for adding to smoothies or oatmeal—but it does not contain the cannabinoids and terpenes that hemp CBD products (oil or otherwise) do.
Extracting the medicinal compounds from hemp
Extraction of terpenes is a simple process that has been used for centuries to create natural byproducts from many different types of plants. But extracting terpenes from cannabis is careful work because the Cannabidiol molecule is fragile and cannot remain stable under conditions that are too cold, hot, dry, or moist. The two primary extraction methods are supercritical CO2 extraction and ethanol extraction. The CO2 process involves a solvent being forced through an extraction vessel packed with ground plant material—like water through an espresso machine. You want to have finely ground hemp plant material that will allow the solvent to flow through smoothly. The plant material must be evenly milled, it won’t extract completely, and your CBD oil will be weak. Pharma Hemp uses a tried-and-tested process that has worked on an industrial scale for years, and the proof is in our lab tests.
With the pressure under control, several pumps cycle the supercritical carbon dioxide through the plant matter until all of the cannabinoids and terpenes have been extracted and gathered. The carbon dioxide is then allowed to return to its gaseous form. What is left behind is a dark, concentrated resin that can be modified to achieve different levels of potency for dosing. The resin exists in all kinds of CBD formulations, from balms to edible oils to versatile CBD crystal.
So, which CBD products should I purchase?
Because there is such a wide variety of CBD supplements, CBD oils, CBD extracts, and CBD topicals we can’t suggest any specific products without first knowing what you are looking for and what you have tried in the past. The process requires a consultation with one of our qualified doctors. What we can do is help guide you toward a decision that’s is right for you. If it’s hemp extract that you are looking for, with no additional ingredients, then a tincture or gel capsule may be ideal.
It’s necessary for consumers to know that the terpene extraction and refinement process can be laborious to execute on a large scale. Not all lab have the right instruments or the sanitary environment for large-scale extractions. We will help you find products from providers who have years of experience with this process, learning how to maximize purity and develop refinement techniques that result in clean, pure, CBD oil and products made with CBD oil. When done correctly, the difference is noticeable.
