In 2019, Burr Oak Township officials opted out of allowing marijuana facilities in the township.

The decision was common among smaller municipalities at the time, on the heels of a state proposal approved by voters in 2018.

Municipalities such as Burr Oak Township had to opt out of allowing cannabis-based businesses within their jurisdictions. Otherwise, they would be “opted-in” by default.

On Monday, a resident brought his case to the board at its virtual meeting.

Matt Craven said he has been “looking at having a conversation” and having the matter placed on the agenda.

To demonstrate community interest, he said he gathered 71 signatures from residents supportive of having a facility in Burr Oak Township.

Craven cited the recent opening of Dollar General and used financial figures to compare that business to a cannabis facility he would like to open.

“I plan to pay $15 an hour for eight to 12 people,” Craven said during the meeting’s public comment segment.

Craven asked how the topic can be placed on the meeting agenda.

While public comment time during a meeting is reserved for the board to hear from the public, it is not necessarily intended to be a conversation-engagement session.

Supervisor George Letts said the matter was on the agenda in 2019, and the board voted at that time to opt-out. The matter also had gone through the planning commission and the board acted…
