While a bill passed by the House last week that would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level is unlikely to make it through the Republican-controlled Senate, a poll out Wednesday found 66% of Americans approve of the measure.

The House passed The MORE Act 228-164 Friday, with five House Republicans joining the vast majority of the Democratic caucus to support the bill.

The Morning Consult/Politico poll suggests the bill has bipartisan public support, with four in five Democrats and just more than half of Republicans saying they either ‘strongly support” or “somewhat support” the House’s vote.

However, Republican poll respondents backed the act by a relatively narrow margin, with 40% reporting they “somewhat oppose” or “strongly oppose” the bill, compared to only 15% of Democrats and 21% of Independent voters.

It follows a Gallup poll last month that found 68% of Americans thought the drug should be legal, the highest measure of support ever recorded in a national poll by Gallup.
