An area of Sheffield city centre that has developed a notorious reputation for “always stinking of cannabis” – but how bad is the problem?

This week I visited see if people really were smoking cannabis in public after our story about a a street close to The Moor where the smell of cannabis is so bad that people say you can “get high just by walking by”. John, a dad who absolutely detests drugs after losing one son to drugs and almost losing a daughter complained about how moving around this area was intolerable.

And the responses to that story indicated that the problem was widespread and common – but when we went to check it out, we discovered a whole different problem.

The benches in the area were packed with cigarette smokers, meaning children were exposed to harmful tobacco fumes

While it is true, that the open space around The Moor Market is not ideal for children and non-smokers, there was no indication that people were smoking cannabis anywhere in the area.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a friendly man who was playing an accordion. He was extremely polite and friendly and allowed children to press the keys on his instrument.

He was not smoking, but several people were. On the benches. While walking. While standing. While talking. Just before entering the market. Just after exiting. Our amateur attempt to count…
