Since January 1st, 2021, marijuana became legal for recreational use in the state of Montana. Since then, Zach Shoppe, the owner of Seed of Life Labs dispensary in Havre claims that there have been tremendous changes to regulations.

“The only constant in this industry is change. Let’s see going on eight years I’ve been in this industry I’ve operated under six different laws, and so there’s consistently new regulations, or new requirements, or new reporting tools, or whatever it is that gets handed our way.” – Zach Shoppe

Zach continues to explain that regulations initially were very limited, but now they are much greater.

“To sum it up, it went from an environment with general rules and oversight, you just had to abide by that. There were no inspections, there was no state inspections, everything was done by mail. You would mail in a medical patient’s information and hand write it. To now the current law we’re operating under, it’s a 200-page law, it’s very thorough.” -Zach Shoppe

During the time when cannabis regulations were much lesser Zach saw it as a lot of uncertainty, and lack of clarity.

“It was a lot of uncertainty, a lack of regulation and clarity and oversight that we needed to in order to feel comfortable making the investment it takes to operate in this industry.”-Zach Shoppe

Overall Zach acknowledges that cannabis has changed and hopes that in the future education and awareness will improve.
