A dispute over a council tax bill led police to a haul of knives and guns along with a cannabis farm.

Armed officers were dispatched after an enforcement officer sent to clamp a car became concerned about the presence of firearms.

Police found Mathew Membury had a haul of weapons from flick knives and air rifles to smoke grenades and that he had converted his bedrooms into a cannabis production operation.

Swansea Crown Court heard Membury has a long history of carrying offensive weapons beginning when he was caught taking a knife to school when he was aged 16.

Jim Davis, prosecuting, said on October 3 last year an enforcement officer working behalf on Neath Port Talbot council went to Membury’s Glynneath home in regards to an unpaid council tax bill.

The officer clamped a van which was registered to the defendant and then called through the letter box of the Chain Walk property to explain what was happening.

Membury emerged from the house and began to dispute he owed the council tax and then told the enforcement officer that he would not be taking his van because there were firearms in it.

Mr Davis said the defendant opened the back of the Renault van and showed the officer a locked gun box before removing a number of items from the vehicle and then getting into the driver’s seat to prevent it being driven away.
