Anyone looking to go through the proper legal channels in order to grow cannabis on a large scale in New Tecumseth is going to have to put their pot plans on hold for a while.

At a special meeting held Oct. 1, council voted 7-3 in favour of placing an interim control bylaw that will pause any decisions on new applications related to the production and cultivation of cannabis.

As part of this decision, the town will be hiring a planning consultant at the cost of $25,000, plus tax, to study the issue while the freeze is in place. Once the study is completed, staff will report back to council with recommendations on how to move forward.


Some of the key issues the town has been grappling with relate to zoning and setback requirements to neighbouring properties. There has also been the issue of growing operations starting up without the town’s approval, including one on the 3rd Line.
