(Learfield News Service/Willmar, MN) — Local law enforcement in west-central Minnesota say they’re ready for an influx of out-of-staters coming to Minnesota now that recreational cannabis is legal.
Willmar Police Chief Jim Felt says he feels “pretty confident that driving under the influence of marijuana is gonna spike dramatically.”
Felt says, “Right now we do have some drug recognition experts that are in the area…. We find it a very important tool and a very useful tool to have somebody that’s trained to that level.”
There will be no state-licensed dispensaries selling cannabis for at least a year and Kandiyohi County Sheriff Eric Tollefson predicts the black market will thrive.
Willmar officials are considering a moratorium on issuing any licenses to sell pot until January 2025.
