Recreational marijuana sales can begin in New Mexico on Friday, but no dispensary in Roswell will be licensed to sell marijuana here for recreational users until May at the earliest, according to a city official.
“We have a lot of inquiries,” said Kevin Maevers, community development director, “but again it is the overall process and the costs associated with going into this business that a lot of our smaller folks have not anticipated.”
After the New Mexico Legislature passed and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Cannabis Regulation Act in April 2021 to authorize recreational cannabis use, the city of Roswell passed ordinances and policies to pave the way for a new industry by April 1 of this year. It also produced a 74-page guidebook intended to instruct prospective recreational cannabis businesses in Roswell on how to obtain the necessary city permits and licenses, which are separate from the state-issued regulatory licenses.
