Road resealing works in Carnarvon have been expediated to this year, while upgrades to roads within the CBD have been pushed back to 2023.
Reconstruction works for Robinson Street had been allocated funding as part of the 2021-22 Roads to Recovery program under the condition the project is completed by December 2022.
The planned works include repair of road pavement and running surface, installation of additional drainage and, pending community and stakeholder feedback, some work on the median.
It is understood attempts to engage consultant project management for the design, specification and supervision of the works have been unsuccessful, with insufficient time to complete the project cited as the main reason for a lack of willingness to undertake the task.
Shire of Carnarvon president Eddie Smith said further consultations suggested the project would be achievable if construction works were delayed until 2023.
“Through consultation, we realised there was a need for a longer project time for the Robinson Street works to consult the community and minimise disruption as much as possible,” he said.
Mr Smith said the 2021-22 Roads to Recovery funding would instead be used to reseal up to 18km of Carnarvon Mullewa Road and town roads.
“We can still undertake needed roadworks by bringing forward the resealing project and fulfil our funding deadline with Roads to Recovery, while planning ahead to the Robinson Street project,” he said.
