At every turn in his years-long advocacy for legalizing marijuana, Gov. Phil Murphy has said his goal is “first and foremost” for social justice since New Jersey has the largest racial gap in prisons in the United States, largely due to minor drug offenses.
Just last week, when he appointed the leader of the commission to regulate cannabis sales three days after voters approved legalization, Murphy called New Jersey’s marijuana laws “broken.”
“We now join the growing number of states that have come to the rightful conclusion that our marijuana laws had done more harm than good, had ruined more futures than they had helped, and hurt many communities by saddling Black and brown people, predominately young men, with an arrest and a host of collateral consequences for non-violent offenses,” Murphy said. “And in many cases, sadly, those consequences were carried for the rest of their lives.”
But in nearly three years since taking office, Murphy has not used his pardon…
