There are many unique clubs and organizations for students to join at Illinois State University . A newly formed club, Cannabis Club Redbirds, had its first meeting of the semester on Monday.

Cannabis Club Redbirds was first formed over a year ago. Since then, the group has grown from 15 members to over 80.

President Jackie Heim and the Cannabis Club Redbirds council mentioned they had worries about the club getting permission to form.

“People weren’t taking us seriously,” Heim said.

One of their main goals relates heavily to these worries.

“Helping to destigmatize the plant,” said Heim, was a central aspect of the formation of the club.

The president elaborated on several more goals of the club.

“We want to offer networking opportunities to our club members,” Heim said.

The club is already in contact with various businesses and organizations throughout Normal and beyond for potential internships, partnerships and more.

In addition to this, the club has plans for service projects, fundraisers, events and more. One such project involves the establishment of a bus line to a local medical dispensary.

Council Member Grant Winkler spoke on the increasing curiosity about the club.

“The interest has grown exponentially,” Winkler said.
