Cannabis is Thailand’s “secret weapon” in the battle to lure back tourists as the Covid pandemic subsides, according to a public health official.
Anutin Charnvirakul from the Secretary of the Public Health Commission said Thailand’s position as the only country in Asia to partially decriminalise the drug would give it an advantage in the race to return tourism numbers to pre-pandemic levels, reports Thaiger.
The comments were made at a medical marijuana conference at Bangkok’s Thammasat University, part of a push by public health minister Anutin Charnvirakul to educate the public, health and tourism industry about recent changes to Thailand’s narcotics laws.
Thailand legalised the growing, sale and consumption of cannabis in a series of changes to the nation’s narcotics laws between February 2019 and January 2022.
However, cannabis sold in Thailand will not cause a high as products with more than 0.2 per cent of the psychoactive component THC remain illegal.

Cannabis products are instead marketed for their CDB compenent, an active ingredient in the plant that is used to treat pain, lower anxiety, and stimulate appetite.
The change in the law has already created a boom in CBD-infused food and drinks outlets in Bangkok and other tourist hotspots.
