Cannabis referendum: anxious wait for results after long and gruelling campaignsPosted by On

Groups for and against the legalisation of recreational cannabis are eagerly awaiting the release of preliminary referendum results, after a long and gruelling year of campaigning.

On election day, nearly two weeks ago, Kiwis voted on two referendums, including on whether they support the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill. The preliminary results will be released at 2pm on Friday.

If Kiwis voted “yes”, New Zealand will be the first country in the world to pass a referendum on cannabis. Switzerland held a referendum in 2008, but only 36.7 per cent supported legalisation.

The preliminary results will not include special votes, so if it’s very close we will have to wait until the final results are released on November 6.
