Upgrades to three intersections in Geraldton’s CBD have earnt the City of Greater Geraldton a road safety award.
The City was given the 2023 Safe System Approach Road Infrastructure Local Government Road Safety Award for the construction of the Durlacher-Maitland streets and Cathedral Avenue-Sanford Street roundabouts, as well as improvements to the existing Cathedral Avenue-Maitland Street roundabout.
City Mayor Shane Van Styn said these intersections were all identified as blackspots and the changes made had significantly improved traffic flow and safety for all users, and had been welcomed by the public.
“In the five years prior to changes being made at these three intersections, two fatalities and dozens of crashes resulting in significant property damages were recorded,” he said.
“Since the two new roundabouts were constructed at the Durlacher-Maitland Streets and Cathedral Avenue-Sanford Street intersections, traffic flow and overall safety has greatly improved. Mainroads WA Crash Map Data shows there have been no crashes at either roundabout since they opened in December 2020 and June 2021 respectively.
“Although the changes to the Cathedral Avenue-Maitland Street roundabout were only completed in June 2023, ongoing social media commentary and staff observations have shown the speed of vehicles entering and exiting the roundabout has slowed down considerably and pedestrian safety also appears to have been improved.”
