Let’s play a game. Let’s promise that we have no intention of delaying a legal cannabis marketplace, which over 60% of Chico voters support. Let’s say that all we really care about is revenue. Then, let’s pull the bait-and-switch. Let’s take over 20 hours of public meetings, two years of work on cannabis legislation, and countless hours of staff and consultant time and guidance and throw it away on a whim.

Let’s eliminate the business types (manufacturing, distribution, and testing) that create hundreds of jobs and have the most upward mobility potential for a local workforce. In fact, let’s allow another city to benefit from the revenue and jobs that we could have earned. While we’re at it, let’s auction off licenses for retail dispensaries to the highest bidder, because we care more about dollar signs than local entrepreneurs whoare genuinely invested in our community. Let’s do it without taking public comment or advising the public and elected body about our intentions ahead of time.

Are you on the edge of your seat yet? This is the game your council is playing, and it is not a game of logic, reason, or transparency and fairness. I hope you are watching closely, because the next move will be telling …
